닻미술관은 올해를 마무리하는 전시로 <물질과 상상 Material and Imagination>을 준비했습니다. 바바라 보스워스 Barbara Bosworth, 필리스 갈렘보 Phyllis Galembo, 엘라이쟈 고윈 Elijah Gowin, 김윤수 Yunsoo Kim, 이진영 Jinyoung Lee 다섯 명의 작가가 함께하는 이번 전시는 작가의 소재가 각자의 매체를 통해 작품으로 구현되는 과정, 즉 물질이 상상이 되는 이야기에 주목해봅니다.
바바라 보스워스는 ‘구름 바다 Sea of Clouds’를 통해 작가가 삶의 마지막 여정에 다다른 어머니를 만나러 가는 비행길 창문에서 촬영한 구름 사진을 선보입니다. 바다와 같이 펼쳐지는 구름 공간을 바라보다 천국을 떠올린 작가는 그 순간의 담담한 심상을 사진으로 고요하게 담아냅니다.
필리스 갈렘보는 1997년부터 2001년까지 아이티 Haiti의 소도 Sodo에서 행해지는 연례 종교 의식을 사진으로 기록합니다. 순례자들과 함께 물속으로 들어가 촬영한 사진은 작가도 예측할 수 없는 장면으로 드러나는데, 이성과 감성을 넘어선 밀도 높은 의식 행위는 결국 기록이 아닌 강렬한 시가 됩니다.
엘라이쟈 고윈은 인간의 한계와, 그럼에도 시도해야하는 의미를 사진 예술로 전합니다. 그는 곧바로 응시할 수 없는 태양을 사진 빛으로 기꺼이 포착하며 인간의 초월적 감각과 상상의 기술을 증명하듯 선보입니다. 이러한 태도는 공중에서 떨어지고 부유하는 사람을 신비하게 구현하여 미묘한 감정을 불러일으키는 ‘낙하와 부유 Of Falling & Floating’ 시리즈에도 이어집니다.
김윤수는 시간과 공간 안에 가만히 머무르며 그 시간 사이, 공간 사이에서 서서히 떠오르는 자연과 삶의 순수한 진실을 그대로 흡수합니다. 그렇게 흡수한 이야기는 작가에게 온전히 간직된 채 그의 손끝에서 다시 섬세하고, 푸른 작품으로 재현됩니다. 가 닿을 수 없는 듯 했던 저편의 진실은 그의 작품 덕분에 우리 곁에 머무릅니다.
이진영은 19세기 사진 기법 가운데 하나인 암브로타입을 매개로 작업합니다. 감광제가 마르기 전에 현상해야 하는 암브로타입의 특성에 따라 그의 작품에는 공중의 입자들이 부착되어 미묘한 흔적으로 남습니다. 이러한 ‘흔적의 흔적’은 작품의 물질성을 이루는 동시에 상상의 틈이 되고, 층위로 구현된 바람과 구름 이미지는 추상적 공간이 되어 어느덧 공감각적 심상을 불러일으킵니다.
다섯 작가의 물질과 상상 사이 예술적 진자 운동은 한 공간 안에 서로 겹쳐지며 예술의 현존과 그 너머 삶의 진실에 대해 고찰해 볼 수 있도록 합니다. 섬세한 감각으로 대상을 경험하고 그로부터 깨달은 이야기를 각자의 언어로 응축한 다섯 작가는 우리 앞에 또 하나의 아름다운 물질을 내어 놓습니다. 작가들이 대상을 받아들이는 순수한 마음과 같이, 이들의 작품을 수용하며 자신만의 새로운 상상의 여정을 이어나가시기 바랍니다.

바바라 보스워스 Barbara Bosworth
Barbara Bosworth received her MFA in photography from Rochester Institute of Technology and has worked as a photographer for almost 40 years and has been working as a professor of photography at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston since 1997.
She mainly works with a large format camera, taking in Mother Nature, deeply examining the relationship between that and human beings, and then reveals her findings through photography. Bosworth’s work has been widely exhibited, notably in recent retrospectives at the Denver Art Museum in Colorado, Peabody Essex Museum in Salem in Massachusetts, the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C.. She will be publishing a new book, ‘Sea of Clouds’ with Datz Press in conjunction with this exhibition.
바바라 보스워스는 Rochester Institute of Technology에서 사진을 전공하고, 40년 가까이 사진가로 활동하며 1997년부터 Massachusetts College of Art에서 사진을 함께 가르치고 있다. 작가는 주로 대형 카메라를 들고 대자연을 촬영하며 자연 원형과 인간의 관계에 대해 깊이 탐구하고 이를 작업으로 선보인다. Denver Art Museum, Peabody Essex Museum, Smithsonian American Art Museum, 닻미술관 등 다수 기관에서 개인전과 단체전을 열었으며, 이번 전시와 연계하여 닻프레스에서 아티스트 북 ‘Sea of Clouds’를 새롭게 출간한다.

필리스 갈렘보 Phyllis Galembo
Phyllis Galembo received her MFA in photography and printmaking from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Phyllis Galembo is professor emeritus at the University at Albany, State University of New York where she taught photography from 1978-2018. She mainly travels throughout the Americas with a particular interest in African culture and religion, approaching it as the main subject of her work. Galembo’s work has been held in solo and group exhibitions at the International Center for Photography, George Eastman House International Museum of Photography, American Museum of Natural History, and more. She will be publishing ‘SODO, Haiti’ with Datz Press in conjunction with this exhibition.
필리스 갈렘보는 University of Wisconsin at Madison에서 사진과 판화를 전공하였다. 이후 사진가로 활동하며 1978부터 2018년까지 University at Albany, State University of New York에서 교수로 재직하였다. 작가는 미국을 여행하며 특히 아프리카의 문화와 종교에 관심을 갖고 이를 사진의 주요 주제로 다루고 있다. International Center for Photography, George Eastman House International Museum of Photography, American Museum of Natural History 외 다수 기관에서 개인전과 단체전을 열었으며, 이번 전시와 연계하여 닻프레스에서 사진집 ‘SODO, Haiti’가 출판될 예정이다.
엘라이쟈 고윈 Elijah Gowin
Elijah Gowin received his BFA in Art history from Davidson College and his MFA in photography from the University of New Mexico. Currently, he is teaching photography at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Gowin is interested in the intersecting moments of the body and spirit of humans, and their surrounding landscapes, which he explores through the medium of photography. Gowins’ has shown his work through solo exhibitions at the Robert Mann Gallery(2011), the Page Bond Gallery(2006),and more. Recently, he has also shown in group exhibition at the Light Factory(2020), the Datz Museum of Arts(2019). His works is included in the collections of the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Datz Museum of Arts, and more.
엘라이쟈 고윈은 Davidson College에서 미술사를 전공하고 University of New Mexico에서 사진으로 석사를 전공했다. 작가는 인간의 정신과 육체의 교차적 순간과 풍경에 관심을 갖고 이를 사진 매체로 담아내는 데 주력한다. Robert Mann Gallery(2011), Page Bond Gallery(2006) 등에서 개인전을 열었으며, 최근 Light Factory(2020), 닻미술관(2019)을 비롯해 다수 미술관에서 단체전을 열었다. Corcoran Gallery of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 닻미술관 등에 작품이 소장되어 있으며 현재 University of Missouri-Kansas City에서 사진을 가르치고 있다.
김윤수 Yunsoo Kim
Yunsoo Kim studied sculpture at Chung-Ang University and Graduate School. She is interested in molding a more flexible encounter in the way time and material intervenes with space, through a process that starts from observing multiple points of an object’s boundary. She has held solo exhibitions at Gallery soso(2017), Alter Ego(2015), Project Space Sarubia(2008), and more. She has also participated in several group exhibitions at Museum of Contemporary Art Busan(2020), Daecheong ho Museum of Art(2019), Savina Museum(2018), and more. Her works are included in the collections of the Seoul Museum of Art, Museum of Contemporary Art Busan, Art Bank in the National Museum of Modern Contemporary Art, OCI Museum of Art, Datz Museum of Art, etc.
김윤수는 중앙대학교와 동대학원에서 조소를 전공하였다. 작가는 경계의 여러 지점을 바라보며, 시간과 물질이 공간에 개입하는 방식을 보다 유연하게 하는 것에 관심을 갖는다. 갤러리소소(2017), 알떼에고(2015), 프로젝트 스페이스 사루비아(2008) 등에서 개인전을 열었으며, 그 외 부산현대미술관(2020), 청주시립대청호미술관(2019), 사비나미술관(2018) 등 다수 단체전에 참여하였다. 서울시립미술관, 부산현대미술관, 국립현대미술관 미술은행, OCI미술관, 닻미술관 등에 작품이 소장되어 있다.
이진영 Jinyoung Lee
Jinyoung Lee majored in musical composition at Chugye University of the Arts and in media arts(Photography) at Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln. She utilizes a wet plate process called Ambrotype, focusing on the interaction between the medium and the artist’s imagination. Through this process, she projects a ‘sense of completeness’ of an experience into her work. She has held solo exhibitions at Woong Gallery(2020), Gallery aso, Mul, Namoo Madang(2019), and group exhibitions at Park Ryu Sook Gallery(2020), Vietnam National Museum of Fine Arts & Korean Cultural Center at Vietnam(2019). Jinyoung Lee also won Art Magazine Art & Collector Awards in 2011.
이진영은 추계예술대학교에서 작곡을 전공하고, 쾰른 미디어 예술대학교에서 미디어아트(사진)을 전공했다. 작가는 습판사진술의 하나인 암브로타입Ambrotype을 활용하여 매체와 작가적 상상력의 상호 작용에 몰두하며 경험에 대한 완전감完全感을 작품에 투영하는 작업을 진행한다. 웅갤러리(2020), 갤러리아소(2019), 물, 나무 마당(2019) 등에서 개인전을, 박여숙화랑(2020), 베트남국립미술관 & 주베트남한국문화원(2019) 외 다수 기관에서 단체전을 열었다. 2011년 아트앤컬렉터 미술상을 수상했다.
As its final exhibition of the year, Datz Museum of Art has organized Material and Imagination. The exhibition will focus on the process through which the subject matter of the participating artists―Barbara Bosworth, Phyllis Galembo, Elijah Gowin, Yunsoo Kim and Jinyoung Lee―is embodied in their art through different media. It is a story about material becoming imagination.
In Sea of Clouds, Barbara Bosworth presents photographs of clouds she took through the window of a plane when she was on her way to meet her mother, who was in the final days of her life journey. The clouds, spread out like the sea, reminded Bosworth of heaven as she calmly captured the serenity of the moment.
Between 1997 and 2001, Phyllis Galembo documented religious ceremonies that took place annually in Sodo, Haiti. Submerged in sacred waters along with the pilgrims, the artist captured scenes unpredictable and intense. Her work captured ritual scenes transcending reason and emotion, turning out to be more than documentation, but powerful poetry.
Elijah Gowin conveys the limitations of humans and the significance of trying in spite of such limitations through photography. Gowin captures the sun, impossible to be looked at with the naked eye, with photographic light and hints at the transcendental senses of humans with the art of imagination. This attitude is also expressed in his work, Of Falling & Floating, which evokes peculiar emotions in looking at people mysteriously falling and floating in mid-air.
Yunsoo Kim calmly absorbs the pure truths of nature and life that slowly rise up amidst time and space. The stories thus soundly absorbed within the artist are then represented as delicate, blue works at the fingertips of her hands. The truth, which seemed unapproachable, now dwells beside us thanks to her work.
Jinyoung Lee works with the Ambrotype, a photographic technique from the 19th century. Due to the nature of the Ambrotype, which must be developed before the sensitizer dries, particles from the air attach themselves to the plate and leave subtle traces in the works. This Trace of a Trace not only addresses the materiality of the work but also opens a gap for imagination as the images of wind and clouds embodied in layers become an abstract space that evokes synesthetic imagery.
The artistic pendulum moving between material and imagination in the works of these five artists overlaps one another in this common space, enabling us to contemplate together on the presence of art and the truths of life revealed through art. The five artists approach various subjects with delicate sensibilities and beautifully condense the stories attained in their unique languages, presented to us in a new material form. Through an appreciation of these works, we hope viewers will be encouraged to continue their own journeys of imagination, embracing their subjects purely and innocently as these artists have done.
